[Breaking News] Lee Jae-myung's 21st presidential term officially begins...From 6:21 a.m. today
The term of the 21st President Lee Jae-myung officially began at 6:21 a.m. on June 4.
The National Election Commission held a plenary session at 6:15 a.m. on the day and officially confirmed Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party of Korea as the president-elect according to the results of the vote count for the 21st presidential election. At 6:21 a.m., Roh Tae-ak, chairman of the Central Election Commission, tapped the gavel, declaring, "The 21st president-elect is Lee Jae-myung."
The presidential election was held as a vacancy election following the dismissal of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, and as soon as the NEC voted on the election, Lee's term began immediately. All presidential powers were automatically transferred from Lee Ju-ho, former acting deputy prime minister and education minister, to President Lee Jae-myung at the same time.
President Lee is scheduled to pay respects to the Seoul National Cemetery in the morning and make an official oath of office at 11 a.m. at the central hall of the National Assembly building. The National Election Commission will issue a certificate of election to Park Chan-dae, floor leader of the main opposition Minjoo Party, at the Gwacheon Government Complex at 7 a.m.
In this election, Lee won a total of 17.287,513 votes (49.42 percent). Kim Moon-soo, the candidate for People's Power, recorded 41.15% and Lee Joon-seok, the candidate for the New Reform Party, recorded 8.34%.
